Hidden Hazards of Grilling

The one less hazard to have in your home

Over time, hairbrush bristles can fall out; same thing with makeup and paintbrushes, but none of these types of brushes pose a serious effect on your health like a wire brush shedding its metal slivers all over your grill. When you use a wire brush to clean your grill and grate, the sharp wire bristles can potentially get into your food and into your system—and in some cases cause serious danger to your body.

How often do these wire brush injuries happen?

“Researchers found that, between 2002 and 2014, there were 43 cases in the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), a group of about 100 emergency departments in U.S. hospitals that track injuries from consumer products. Based on this number, the researchers estimated there were a total of 1,698 grill brush injuries in emergency departments nationwide from 2002 to 2014, or about 130 per year.” (Source: CNN.com 2016)

What’s even more alarming is that most of victims of grill brush injuries occurred in individuals younger than 18 years of age, making up 40% of the cases; adults, ages 19-40, made up 30%.

“Most of the injuries from ingesting the small bristles are to the throat area (including the tonsils) and the oral cavity (tongue, mouth, palate, and teeth), but there are also reports of the wires causing damage to the esophagus—and even perforating the intestines, necessitating emergency surgery.” (Source BerkeleyWellness.com, 2016)
